Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut voiced her disagreement with the notion of paying housewives salaries for doing their jobs.
Earlier today, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor took to Twitter to extend support for the concept of “recognizing housework as a salaried profession” by Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) President Kamal Haasan.
The Thiruvananthapuram MP added that the “services of women homemakers in society, increase their power & autonomy & generate near-universal basic income” would be recognised and monetised by the change.
Driven by actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan, the MNM has begun campaigning for the upcoming Assembly Elections across Tamil Nadu. The promise to make homemakers a salaried class is one of its survey commitments.
However, Kangana Ranaut, who does not shy from expressing her opinions, is against the idea, which she described as “partially painful and partially funny”. She opines that women “don’t need salary for being the Queens” of their “own little kingdom”.

In his party’s ‘Vision Document – Tamizh Nadu 2021’ released in February 2020, Kamal Haasan had said: “Housewife itself is a big job and should be paid commensurately. Paying housewives for doing their job is an idea whose time has truly come and we shall ensure it.”
