The National Conference (NC), led by former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, won 25 of the 140 seats in the District Development Council (DDC) elections in the Jammu & Kashmir region. In the Kashmir Valley, the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) swept the elections. In the first major direct polling exercise in the region after the scrapping of its special status in August last year, the six-party grouping was led by the NC.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) of another former chief minister, Mehbooba Mufti, also a member of the PAGD, was only able to win one seat in the Nowshera region of Jammu.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged in Jammu with 71 seats as the largest party, while Congress won 17 seats, Jammu & Kashmir Apni Party three, Panthers Party two, and Bahujan Samaj Party one.

In the eight-phase elections, the BJP put forward central ministers such as Jitendra Singh and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi to campaign and managed to win three out of 140 seats in Kashmir.

“NC leader Omar Abdullah said in a tweet on Tuesday, “I understand the urge to overplay the 3 seats won by the BJP in the valley, but why underplay the @JKPAGD’s 35 wins/leads in Jammu province. We’re not parties based in Kashmir, we’re political parties with good support in both Kashmir and Jammu.
