On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was saddened to see reports of violence at the US Capitol. He also said it was not possible to subvert the political process by illegal demonstrations.

“Distressed to see news about rioting and violence. Orderly and peaceful transfer of power must continue. The democratic process cannot be allowed to be subverted through unlawful protests,” PM Modi tweeted.

On Wednesday, hundreds of supporters of President Donald Trump invaded the US Capitol in an attempt to reverse his electoral defeat, seizing the emblem of American democracy, and prompting Congress to temporarily postpone the session to certify the victory of President-elect Joe Biden.

Police cleared senators and fought to rid the Capitol of Trump backers for more than three hours after the invasion, who surged down the hallways and rummaged through offices in stunning scenes of confusion and anarchy.

Meanwhile, the Washington police said that one woman lost her life after being shot during the confusion. The FBI said two alleged explosive devices had been disarmed by it.

About the November 3 election, the violence at the US Capitol was the result of months of inflammatory and escalating rhetoric, with Trump frequently making unfounded statements that the vote was stolen while refusing to concede. In the past two months, he has even tried to persuade his supporters to help him heal his defeat.
