The new year will be greeted by several thousand farmers who are on the roads protesting the three agricultural laws away from their homes and communities. In their attempt to reach Haryana, a party of farmers broke through barricades at the Shahjahanpur frontier between Rajasthan and Haryana on Thursday. A water cannon and tear gas were used by the Haryana police, who defied some, while some others managed to get past the barriers.
Here are the latest updates:

  1. While Minister of Agriculture Narendra Singh Tomar has repeatedly called on union leaders to send women, children, and the elderly back to their homes, there is no budget for the protesters. Jal Kaur, 74, who is wheelchair-bound, has entered the Singhu protest, according to Kisan Ekta Morcha’s Twitter account.
  2. Several farmers are sitting at the Rajasthan-Haryana border after they were barred from going further into Haryana. A group of demonstrators broke through the police barricades at the border of Shahjahanpur with Rajasthan on Thursday. A water cannon and tear gas were used on them by the Haryana Police on Thursday. On-site farm leaders made it clear that their permission was not granted to the protesters who pushed their way into Haryana.
  3. In Singhu, in their own way, demonstrators are ushering in New Year’s Eve. As they have done in the past, others have agreed to do ‘Sewa’. For all producers, a ‘Turban Langar’ will be set up. Many farmers don’t have turbans that are new. Turban will disperse the Langar.
  4. On Thursday, Manohar Lal Khattar, Haryana’s chief minister, again said he would leave politics if he failed to obtain a promise of minimum support prices for farmers. Deputy CM Dushyant Chautala also indicated the same contribution to the farmers’ MSP.
  5. A resolution demanding the immediate abolition of the three controversial central laws was unanimously passed by the Kerala Assembly on Thursday. In a surprising move, the BJP’s lone member of the Kerala Assembly, O Rajagopal, backed the motion.
  6. The government of Rajasthan has agreed to run a week-long ‘Kisan Bachao-Desh Bachao’ drive in all villages of the state from January 5.
  7. On Wednesday, the Aam Aadmi Party mounted five hotspot systems on the Singhu border.
  8. The agitation of farmers in Punjab has taken an alarming turn as over 1,600 cell towers for which the Governor has summoned the Chief Secretary and the DGP have been destroyed. Reliance Jio wrote to Chief Minister Amarinder Singh of Punjab requesting his intervention for action against those responsible for “sabotage and vandalism” cases.
  9. A common ground has been found on the topic of stubble burning and the increase of power tariffs as the talks between the farmers and the Centre begin.
  10. No consensus on the MSP issue has been reached as farmers are seeking a legal guarantee for the MSP.

The next meeting will take place on January 4, which will be the seventh round of meetings. Although the Centre hopes to find a consensus at the conference, the farmers said they will not withdraw the protest until the laws are repealed.
