Unnao’s Bharatiya Janata Party MP, Sakshi Maharaj, has created a political uproar by alleging that Asaduddin Owaisi, chief of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), supported the BJP in the 2020 Bihar Assembly Elections. The Unnao MP added that the decision of AIMIM to contest the elections in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal would help the BJP register victory in both states.

It is the mercy of Heaven. May God grant him strength. Sakshi Maharaj told reporters, “It is God’s grace. May God give him strength. He helped us in Bihar and will help us (BJP) in Uttar Pradesh panchayat and Assembly polls and also in West Bengal,”

The Congress accused the AIMIM of colluding with the BJP during the Bihar Assembly Elections, and branded the Owaisi-led faction as the ‘B-team’ of the BJP. In particular, AIMIM won five Muslim-dominated victories.
The AIMIM is now all set to contest the forthcoming Uttar Pradesh panchayat polls in coalition with the Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP). “Candidates belonging to AIMIM will be fielded in the panchayat elections as part the Bhagidari Sankalp Morcha alliance,” said SBSP Leader Om Prakash Rajbhar.

A part of the BJP-led government in UP was formerly the SBSP. During the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, however, Rajbhar was expelled by UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath from the Council of Ministers. Currently, the 403-member UP Assembly has four SBSP MLAs.

Owaisi called Rajbhar as his friend on Tuesday and added that “we will show our strength in UP now”
Last month, Owaisi and Rajbhar had declared that they would contest the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections in 2022 as part of the larger alliance called ‘Bhagidari Sankalp Morcha’.

With respect to West Bengal, Owaisi has already declared that AIMIM will contest the state’s 2021 Assembly Elections. He recently visited West Bengal and held talks with Abbas Siddiqui, a prominent Muslim leader.

Sk Abdul Kalam, who was AIMIM’s acting West Bengal unit chief, joined the Trinamool Congress on January 9 along with other eighth Congress on January 9.
