Kerala is expected to set a national record with its capital Thiruvananthapuram having a mayor who is just 21 years old, with the results of the local polls announced.
Once Arya Rajendran, a 21-year-old college student, takes over as mayor of the city, she will officially become the youngest person in the world to hold a mayoral position anywhere.
Sources suggest Arya Rajendran’s name for the post of mayor was suggested by the CPM’s Thiruvanathapuram district secretariat.
The state committee is expected to endorse this proposal and the final decision is likely to be announced by Saturday.
At All Saints College, Thiruvanathapuram, Arya Rajendran is a law student.
Arya won the Mudavanmugal ward in the just-concluded civic elections, and was officially the youngest candidate for the party this time.
