On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the Ayushman Bharat scheme via video conferencing to expand coverage of health insurance to all Jammu and Kashmir citizens.

The Office of the Prime Minister said the scheme will guarantee universal health care and focus on providing financial risk protection and ensuring that both people and societies receive reliable and affordable basic health services.

“The scheme will ensure Universal Health Coverage and focus on providing financial risk protection and ensuring quality and affordable essential health services to all individuals and communities,” the PMO said in a statement.

Also speaking on the occasion were Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory, Manoj Sinha.

The scheme will provide all residents of the UT of Jammu and Kashmir with free-of-cost insurance cover, the PMO added, adding that it will extend financial cover of up to ⁇ 5 lakh per family on a floater basis to all UT residents.

The organizational expansion of the ‘Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana’ (PM-JAY) to approximately 15 lakh additional families is provided for, the PMO statement said, adding that the scheme would run in convergence with PM-JAY in the insurance mode.

The advantages of the system would be available across the world. Hospitals empanelled under the PM-JAY scheme, the PMO added, will also have services under this scheme.
