Congress leader Harish Rawat has demanded Bharat Ratna for UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati.

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary and former Uttarakhand chief minister said that the incumbent Congress president and former Uttar Pradesh CM are astute politicians.

Rawat said that one may have different views on political issues, taking his Twitter account, but the truth can not be ignored that Sonia Gandhi has contributed enormously to uplift women in India.

The Congress chief, sharing his views on Mayawati, said that the supreme BSP has worked for the upliftment of the downtrodden for decades and instilled confidence in them.

Rawat asked the Modi government to award the highest civilian honour on them while heaping praise on Gandhi and Mayawati.

On August 8, 2019, at an investiture ceremony held in Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Ram Nath Kovind presented Nanaji Deshmukh (posthumously), Dr Bhupendra Kumar Hazarika (posthumously) and late Pranab Mukherjee with the Bharat Ratna Awards.
Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian decoration conferred for exemplary contribution to the advancement of art, literature and technology, and in appreciation of the highest order of public service. It is also not mandatory to grant Bharat Ratna each year.
