A severe cold wave struck Kashmir on Thursday and resulted in freezing Dal Lake. The city of Srinagar recorded the coldest night in the past 30 years.
Srinagar recorded minus 8.4-degree Celsius, the coldest since 1991.
However, it was not the lowest recorded temperature. The cold waves couldn’t beat the intense winter of 1893. The recorded temperature then was 14.4 degrees Celcius.

Pahalgam recorded a minimum temperature of minus 11.1 degrees Celsius – up from the previous night’s minus 11.7 degrees Celsius.
In a resort in Gulmarg, the minimum temperature settled at minus 7 degrees Celsius. It was at minus 10, a night before.
This temperature decline resulted in freezing up the city. The water supply pipes froze.
The declined temperature froze down the city. The water supply pipes are blocked by ice. The roads are covered by a thick layer of ice, making it difficult for motorists to drive.
Kashmir is currently under the grip of “Chillai-Kalan”. It is a 40-day winter period when a cold wave grips the region and cover it with layers of ice and snow. In this duration, the temperature drops considerably that led to the freezing of water bodies including the famous Dal Lake
