A 42-year-old man allegedly starved his 80-year-old father to death in a shocking incident after locking him up inside a room in their house in Kerala’s Kottayam district of Mundakkayam town. Police took the accused into custody on Thursday under IPC 304 (death by negligence) after the initial results of the post-mortem examination of the elderly man revealed that his internal organs had shrunk because ofmalnutrition.
The octogenarian deceased was known as Podiyan. He and his wife Ammini (76) had their 42-year-old son, known as Reji, kept locked inside a room of their house in Mundakkayam. As per local residents, his elderly parents had been confined without food by Reji. He used to tie his pet dog inside the room whenever he left the house to keep strangers from entering and supporting the elderly couple.
Elderly couple rushed to hospital
As the condition of the elderly couple worsened, the locals told Asha staff and representatives of palliative care, defying their fears, who then rushed to the scene with a police team and transferred the couple on Tuesday to a general hospital in Kanjrappally. The initial findings of the autopsy performed on Podiyam’s body revealed that he had been living without food for a very long time. Due to this, his internal organs contracted and he died.
